Montgomeryshire Moth Group, June 2026 News and Events Calendar.

 Evening Events for 2026

Our evening event at Llanymynech rocks on 18th April had a poor catch because it was cold. It was a little better at Llanidloes at Ash & Elm Horticulture in terms of numbers of moths with 9 species, outnumbered by 32 people turning up. There is a report on the MMG blog for the Llanidloes event.

Our next moth group evening event will be back at Craig Rhiwarth, Llangynog in the far north of the county on 13th June. We will be targeting first generation Weaver's Wave, discovered at the site last year and attempting to establish the strength of the population of this scarce moth in Montgomeryshire

Most of the traps will be placed alongside the back lane which leads from Llangynog to Penybontfawr.

This was a very successful location last year for a recording session.

Parking will be in the village car park and involve a short walk along the lane to where the event will be based.

Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for an evening, outdoor event and you will need to bring your own refreshments. A head/hand torch is essential. Insect repellent is recommended as a precaution. Please bring something to sit on if needed.

Directions:

The event base is about 380 metres from the village car park.

It is best to approach Llangynog from the east or west, along the B4391. Park up in the village car park, where there are public toilets.

Walk north from the car park, crossing the river, then turn right, off the B4391 and up a single track lane. Almost immediately turn right again and walk along this lane, with the open, rocky slopes of Craig Rhiwarth on your left until you reach the event base location.

Drop-off at the event location is possible but vehicles will still need to be left in the village car park.

Village car parking: OS SJ 053 261 w3w///galloped.published.documents

Event base location: OS SJ 0570 2638

w3w///unsettled.dinosaur.alongside.

Traps will be turned on around 9.30pm.

If the event is cancelled, it will be notified by a post on the MMG blog and also the MMG group facebook page. Please check before setting out.

Moth Mornings

We are going to run several moth mornings where we ask someone to run a trap or traps overnight and gather at 8.00am to see what we have got.  Moth mornings will be advertised on the MMG facebook page and by email only a few days in advance to fit in with the weather.

We did several at Lake Vyrnwy last year with the RSPB and a local team - Kate Gillan and Fay Hirst, will be continuing these this summer.  That will leave me free to set up a permanent Robinson MV trap at Llanymynech Golf Club and run frequent moth mornings there. Ideally this also needs a local team.  Being limestone grassland etc it has some interesting moths including Light Feathered Rustic.  We have run 4 sessions so far and I can turn on the trap remotely from my phone which is hugely useful.  A big thank you to BIS for funding a permanent trap there

There are other venues that have expressed interest but these events will be only advertised on the MMG Facebook page and by email to those who express interest at short notice.  We don’t need to do paper newsletters so there is no necessity to advertise months in advance.  We are open to suggestions particularly from people with good habitat happy to provide a power supply, and we have extra moth traps if anyone else want to organise Moth Morning Events.  Because of the support on moth identification provided by the MMG Facebook page it is not necessary to be an expert to run these events.  The cold spring weather until recently has held us back.

Local Places For Nature Funding

Local Places for Nature from the Welsh Government but administered by Powys Nature Partnership is funding some more seed packets of the excellent moth mix to give away and also some more kit including some more pheromone lures.  It has also funded more loan traps and Extra Equipment.  If you have had a loan trap and are not actually using it then please contact us to return it as we have people waiting for traps.

Pheremone Lures

Using these last year to attract clearwings has been very successful and we have had records of Lunar Hornet, Red-tipped Clearwing, Currant Clearwing and Welsh Clearwing, all rarely recorded.  We are going to repeat this in 2026.  The best way to make use of the expensive pheromone lures is to move them to new sites frequently.  The moths, if present, come quite quickly and the traps can be checked daily for a couple of days and then taken elsewhere. They fly mainly mid-summer and now I am looking for volunteers to help check and move the traps as well as sites with good habitat where they are likely to be successful.   Please get in touch if you want to help cerisyi@btinternet.com or 07866428875.  The idea is you try a couple of traps with different pheromones for a day or two then take them to the next person.  I am particularly keen to hear from people in the west of Montgomeryshire.

LED Light Traps

We will also be experimenting with highly portable LED light traps, again supplied by the Local Places for Nature grant, which will allow us to try trapping in remote places.  Finding Weaver's Wave at Llangynog has sparked an interest in sites where we have not recorded before because they are remote.   Kate Gillan has already caught some interesting moths around Lake Vyrnwy including Satin Lutestring and Glaucous Shears.

If you catch beetles in your moth trap then Wolfgang Schaeffer wolfgang@cwmweeg.co.uk would love to receive records or photographs of beetles with the usual who, when, where and map reference etc.

You are receiving this email as we have your email address as wanting to receive MMG Events notifications and news.  To unsubscribe please email cerisyi@btinternet.com

Moth night at Ash & Elm Horticulture, Llanidloes. In association with Butterfly Conservation and Camau Gwyrdd

After rather disappointing results from the Llanymynech event in late April, it was hoped that the endless cycle of warm days and cold nights would end before the next moth group evening event. Wrong!

With a forecast of drying air and a rapidly cooling evening, an unexpectedly rainy start was met with at Ash & Elm Horticulture, a 5 acre market garden 3 miles west of Llanidloes.

While the majority of the attendees were given a tour of the grounds, 5 traps and the white sheet were set up. An introductory talk about all things moths was given, followed by a fabulous meal, laid on by members and staff of Ash & Elm. This event was supported by Camau Gwyrdd, a climate action resilience project  https://www.farmgarden.org.uk/projects/camau-gwyrdd.

After traps were switched on around 21.15pm, and light levels dropped proportionately to temperature, the keenest youngsters arrived at the ID table with the first moth, a Pale Prominent,  subsequently known by its adopted name, "Midnight Lilly"!

"Midnight Lilly". Phil McGregor.

It really was a chilly night and the moths were not keen to show themselves. However, in a familiar "dribs & drabs" fashion, we had a drawn out trickle of arrivals. Nut-tree Tussock, Pale-shouldered Brocade, Great Prominent and Scalloped Hazel were next.

Pale-shouldered Brocade. Phil McGregor.

With plenty of hot drinks available a hardy group of attendees made it to around midnight, by which time a crowd pleasing Puss Moth had been potted.

Puss Moth. Phil McGregor.

Some seriously hardcore enthusiasts potted and identified a Muslin Moth at 02.55am. Hats-off to you!

Muslin Moth. Phil McGregor.

All traps were finally switched off at 03.42am, the remnants of the group understandably by now asleep.

Considering a minimum low of 2 centigrade was achieved, a very modest list of nine macro moth species were recorded. The final moth being a White Ermine discovered in the grass below the white sheet as it was being packed away, the following morning. The species list is available here.

23 people attended the event. Many comments were made about the excitement of each moth being found and the extra focus it brought upon those particular species. On many occasions with lots of potted moths, the plainer ones are often completely overlooked.

A big thank you to Dave Ashley & Emma Maxwell at Ash&Elm Horticulture, our hosts for the night and their helpers. To Camau Gwrydd for supporting the event. Butterfly Conservation for our insurance cover and Y Senedd and Powys Nature Partnership's Local Place's for Nature funding support of the moth group.

Finally, a really big thank you to the warmth, enthusiasm and interest of the people attending the event.

Simon Spencer will be opening the moth trap at Llanymynech Golf Club at 08.00am on the 23rd May. 07866428875 or cerisiyi@btinternet.com for further details.

Our next moth group evening event will be back at Craig Rhiwarth, Llangynog in the far north of the county on 13th June. We will be targeting first generation Weaver's Wave, discovered at the site last year and attempting to establish the strength of the population of this scarce moth in Montgomeryshire. Further details will be published here on the blog and on the group facebook page nearer the time.

Many thanks,

Phil.

Upcoming moth group event at Ash&Elm Horticulture, Llanidloes. Friday 15th & Saturday 16th May 2026 in association with Butterfly Conservation and Camau Gwyrdd

 Hi all,

Just a reminder that the next moth group event near Llanidloes is nearly upon us. As always, it is a free event but I would encourage people to register their planned attendance HERE if you would like a free pre-event meal. The food is excellent!

Traps will be switched on around 9.15pm. This extended event runs until late Saturday morning when moths caught during the night will be available to view.

Our wonderful hosts, Emma Maxwell and David Ashley run a fantastic 5 acre market garden https://www.ashandelm.co.uk/ in the Hafren Valley, 3 miles outside Llanidloes.

Surrounded by organic farmland, this site produced more than 80 species in a survey event I ran with Tir Coed back in August 2024. However, this is a new recording site for the moth group.

Location

OS GR SN915847. W3W//slurs.stilted.comically.

Cae Felyn, Old Hall, Llanidloes, SY18 6PW.

From Newtown, turn right at the old market hall in Llanidloes centre. Cross the river bridge following the road to the left through the hamlet of Glan Y Nant. Ash&Elm Horticulture is two miles further along on the left. Look for the tall hedges.

As ever, A hand/head torch is essential. Please wear appropriate, warm clothing and footwear for an outdoor, late evening event. Insect repellant is recommended.

If the event is cancelled, it will be notified by a post on this blog and also the group facebook page. Please check before setting out.

Evening event at Llanymynech Golf Club Saturday 18th April 2026 in association with Butterfly Conservation. Supported by Y Senedd and Local Places for Nature Fund.

Directions: In Pant coming from Welshpool turn left by the Cross Guns Pub.

Take the middle of three roads signposted Golf Club – continue carefully up narrow winding road till you come out on the Golf Course.  Park in the car park behind the Club House SJ265220.  The gate on the entrance which is controlled by a keypad should be open till 8.00PM and I have the number.  Approach closely to exit and it will open.

We will be there from 7.00PM and will switch on lights at about 8.00PM

We use the practice shed in case it rains and will have several light traps

The Golf Club is the lead partner with Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust, Dr Simon Spencer and Helen Upson a conservation grazier in a Nature Network Fund project to clear scrub and extend grazing.  Helen’s cows already graze parts of the Golf Course and we hope to extend this to the MWT reserve.

We will be running a permanent MV moth trap behind the Greenkeepers shed that can be switched on using a mobile phone. Volunteers required.

No booking required.

You will need to bring your own refreshments. A hand/head torch is essential. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for an outdoor, late evening event. Bring a seat with you if required.

***2026 Evening events programme date changes***

Hi all,

due to unforeseen circumstances two event dates have been changed, in effect swapped.

The Llangynog event at Craig Rhiwarth will now take place on Saturday 13th June and the Newtown event at Hafan yr Afon visitor centre will now take place on  Saturday 20th June. The start times remain unchanged.

This is reflected in the events programme on the events page of the moth group website.

As these were already event dates, we hope any inconvenience caused is minimal.

Many thanks,

Phil McGregor & Simon Spencer.

We look forward to welcoming you to the beginning of this years evening events programme at Llanymynech Golf Club on Saturday 18th April.

Montgomeryshire Moth Group 2026 News and Events Calendar by Simon Spencer.

Hi All,

Wishing all of you a happy new year and a successful year of mothing.

Records

First a request to get all your records for 2025 to Peter Williams before the end of January so they can be checked, go on to BIS/BC/CEH and then appear in the maps on the excellent MMG website courtesy of Mike Haigh.  This is particularly important for people with MMG loan traps but if you are struggling I can help.

Local Places For Nature Funding

Grant funding success! Supported by Local Nature Partnerships Cymru and Powys Nature Partnership.

 Hi all,

Simon and I are thrilled to announce we have just received notification of a successful Local Places for Nature (LPfN) grant application amounting to just over £2500.

The grant will enable us to continue the popular wild flower seed mix distribution next year and purchase extra equipment, expanding the engagement activities of the moth group.

We will be purchasing three state-of-the-art LepiLED traps which are 12v, all-weather and ultra lightweight. They will be ideal for engaging people in remote areas for overnight trapping in inhospitable, under-recorded environments such as mountains and moorland.

We are also purchasing more Clearwing pheromone lures to build on the successes of last years recording.

All very exciting and we are looking forward to the 2026 season.

Wishing you all a very happy winter moth-ing season,

Phil & Simon.

***********DERI WOODS EVENT TONIGHT CANCELLED**********

MWT/MMG DERI WOODS EVENT , LLANFAIR CAREINION CANCELLED.

Unfortunately, there is a very poor forecast of heavy rain late into this evening and then the air temperature falling. Mainly for health & safety reasons we have therefore decided to cancel tonight's public event at Deri Woods, Llanfair Caereinion.

A great disappointment as it is the last scheduled public moth group event for this year.

Many thanks to all of you who have participated in the events throughout the year.

Best wishes and see you next year!

Phil McGregor & Simon Spencer.
