Hendre moth night, Saturday 10th October. In association with Butterfly Conservation, supprted by Y Senedd and PNP Local Places for Nature Fund.

A rather chilly night with occasional showers for the last evening event of the year resulted in just Simon Spencer and myself, we hardcore few, spending the first half of the night recording moths at this interesting site.

In the end, it proved to be only the hardier, expected moth species for this type of habitat that we recorded from the traps. A warmer night perhaps may have been different. November Moth agg. and Spruce Carpet were abundant, with good numbers of Pink-barred Sallow and Red-green Carpet.

Again, the new LepiLED provided amusement (gradually getting used to it!), illuminating the forest in radiant colours from its UV bulb.

Who needs the Aurora Borealis
when you have LepiLED!? PMG

Alas! No Autumnal Green Carpet, (target species, I am sure they are there) or interesting migrant species were recorded.

Chestnut and a nice Mottled Umber were the last species recorded as the very last trap was closed down just before 2am.

13 macro species were recorded from 3 actinic, 2 MV and 1 LepiLED trap. The full species list will be available HERE soon.

It just remains to say, a very big thank you to everyone who has been involved in the 2026 evening and daytime events programme, whether helping with funding, organising, hosting, running, attending or even just reading these blog reports. Your contributions/efforts are very much appreciated and do not go unnoticed.

We would particularly like to thank Butterfly Conservation for their continued support with insuring our events and also Y Senedd and Powys Nature Partnership for their financial support in the form of Local Places for Nature grants. These have been a great success in not only refreshing and adding to our equipment inventory, thus enhancing our daytime and evening event outreach capabilities but also increasing the number of moth recorders in the county which is brilliant.

We look forward over winter to preparing the events programme for 2027 and meeting you at some of the events.

Please do get in touch with the group via the facebook page or contacts below if you are interested in hosting or running a moth morning or evening event. We can help with all aspects of assistance.

Many thanks and best wishes,
